Tina, a young German volunteer who stayed in Worth A Haven Foundation for a few weeks, raised funds from friends and relatives and built a beautiful pig barn for the children and education center.

Piggery Farm(Breeding of Pigs)

At first we had done the foundation stage and later the walls construction stage of the piggery house and later had the entire place fully contained, structured and constructed. At first we had done the foundation stage and later the walls construction stage of the piggery house and later had the entire place fully contained, structured and constructed.

Pig production is an enterprise that provides small scale subsistence farmers with a clear opportunity for increased household income that can be a self sustaining project to Worth A Haven Foundation .

Issues that were considered first before starting this project are:

Capital. This is the amount of money required to set up the piggery project. The amount is dependent on the unit size one intends to operate. The capital is needed to construct the sties and to buy equipment and breeding stock. Working capital is also needed to pay for feed, drugs and labor for the initial phase of the business and we purchased 8 pigs from Fort portal town of Kambra breed from a well known Doctor who sold them to us.

Knowledge and skills. Knowledge on how to successfully manage a pig production enterprise is very important. In order for the farmer to avoid making costly mistakes in the running of the pig production enterprise he should receive training in pig husbandry. Therefore we hired a worker who has these skills and currently we have more than 16+ pigs inclusive of piglets within a short period of time.

3. Breeding stock. We had to buy quality pigs of high breed kambra type for efficient utilization of feed and space.

Market .Farmers have to identify the market for their pigs before they start producing them for example Kirembe , wasiiwanaba and kasese towns are our main targets.

Water. Water should be of the right quantity and quality. Inadequate water supply depresses the growth rate of the pigs. Lactating sows need a lot of water for milk production.

Housing. The pigsties are constructed in a way that will allow the stockman to carry out his daily duties with ease. The sties have been designed in a manner that will help management in monitoring the pig enterprise. There are 15 rooms within the pigsty that accommodates all the pigs.

Piggery has now become a business in which we earn money, and it has helped us to keep busy and not remain redundant when mechanical jobs are not available. We have also trained our children on how to manage the piggery business which keeps them busy when they are not at school.

Our challenge is lack of extension services. Extension workers rarely visit us yet we need advice on how to manage our piggery project and how we earn more from this project.
